Electoral college formally elects Joe Biden as President amidst persisting legal battles
With over 80 million votes, the highest gained by any US presidential candidate in history, and 306 electoral college votes, and barring any last minute changes either by the courts or by the US Congress, Joseph Robinette Biden will be sworn in as the 46th President of the United States of America on 20th January, 2021 at 12noon.
The Electoral College met in each of the 50 states on Monday and cast their votes electing Biden as the 46th President of the United States. But legal challenges to his electoral victory by the Trump Campaign still persist. Several cases remain pending before various federal courts and the US Supreme Court.
On 6th January 2021, a joint session of the United States Congress will hold at the Capitol, and is expected to formally count and certify these electoral votes. Barring any last minute changes, they are expected to officially declare Biden elected as President and ready to be sworn in accordingly.
He will move into the White House with his wife, Dr. Jill Tracy Jacobs Biden as the First Lady of the United States, and his dog, Major, which will become the First Dog.
Biden, a Democrat, also has two adult children, Hunter Biden and Ashley Biden. Two of his other children, Beau Biden and Naomi Biden died in 2015 and 1972 respectively.
Alongside Biden, Kamala Devi Harris will be sworn in as the 49th Vice President of the United States.
She will be the first woman, first African-American, and first Asian-American in US history to occupy the second most powerful office in the world's largest democratic country, and will take over from incumbent Vice President Micheal Richard Pence.
Harris, a Democrat, is also the incumbent junior United States Senator from California, a position that she is expected to resign from before taking office as Vice President.
She will move into the White House with her husband, Doug Emhoff, as the Second Gentleman of the United States. They have no children, and were recently married in 2014.
Incumbent President Donald Trump continues to challenge Biden's electoral victory at various courts, alleging fraud and unconstitutional practices by multiple states during the election.
